Conductor Ensembles Composer

Notes & Reviews:

One of Japan's most influential composers and conductors, Kazuo Yamada rejected the 'facile exoticism' of Japanese nationalism. His influences include Mahler and Strauss. He employs Japanese instruments related to shomyo (the chanting of Buddhist hymns).

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
The music is a large-scale oration, interspersed with fragments from the first two movements of Mahler's Fifth Symphony for a poignant collage-like effect. The composer includes some traditional Japanese instruments: the dora (tamtam), horagai (conch horn), and mokugyo (slit drum). I also thought I heard the hirajoshi traditional Japanese mode. Most of the sonorities are western.
