Notes & Reviews:

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
Beethoven's An die Ferne Geliebte, Fauré's five Melodies de Venise, Zemlinsky's six Waltz- Songs after Tuscan Folksongs of Ferdinand Gregorovius, Britten's Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo, Barber's five Melodies Passageres, Eisler's Songs from the Hollywood Songbook, and three songs by Weill make up this substantial and varied program. The songs are ordered chronologically by composer. Allen sings stylishly in English, French, Italian, and German. He has a very light and lyrical voice. His reading of Beethoven's An Die Ferne Geliebte captures the longing for the distant beloved as effectively as anyone could wish. The weight of his voice is well suited to Fauré. Barber set five poems of Rilke, Melodies Passageres (passing melodies), for Pierre Bernac and Francis Poulenc. Allen sings them very well. Spencer comports himself admirably in the variety of styles of this program.

A varied and imaginative song recital from tenor Thomas Michael Allen focusing on themes of distance and longing. Mr. Allen's repertoire spans the centuries, from the French baroque to the contemporary and modern. Charles Spencer, a much sought-after accompanist, is Professor of Lied Interpretation for singers and pianists at the Hochschule fur Musik in Frankfurt.
