Notes & Reviews:

These three song cycles span Shostakovich's entire life: from the early Japanese Romances, to the middle-period Pushkin Romances and finally the Michelangelo Verses (1974). These final grim, austere and ascetic settings are a premonition of his own death a year later. Eloquent and idiomatic performances by two Russian soloists and the Kolner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester conducted by Michael Jurowski, 'an impressive Shostakovich conductor'(Gramophone). Booklet contains liner notes and sung texts.
