Notes & Reviews:

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
In this spirit, Houben and Benita present a night at the lounge, playing Jerome Kern's 'All the Things You Are', Frank Loesser's 'I've Never Been in Love Before', Jule Styne's 'People', Richard Rodgers's 'It Never Entered My Mind', Gershwin's 'Embraceable You', Cole Porter's 'I Concentrate on You', and Hoagy Carmichael's 'The Nearness of You', among many others. Houben sports an interesting hybrid of a bright vintage sound and a contemporary smooth jazz tone. On some tracks he plays melody and countermelody; and in his duets with Benita, the reverberation, likely artificial, always favors him.

2014 marks the bicentennial of the birth of Adolphe Sax, the genius who invented the saxophone. The release of this 2CD set, a mix of French Romantic and American Jazz music, commemorates this event. As is Ricercar's custom, the CD's accompanying booklet includes extensive and informative liner notes. The jazz selections were originally recorded in 1992 and 1999, the Romantic works in 2002. Book of 60 pages / Texts in English and French.
