Notes & Reviews:

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes conducts from the keyboard in this recording of Beethoven's Concertos 2 and 4. A Gilmore Artist Award winner, Andsnes is known for his commanding technique and impeccable musicianship. His tempos in the outer movements of No. 2 are delightfully brisk - there's genuine brio in his allegro - and his tone is bright and crisp. There are many high points in this performance - his rendition of the first-movement cadenza is especially notable both for its clarity and virtuosity. He approaches the No. 4 in exactly the right way, playing it with a mix of technical brilliance and chamber-like intimacy. He emphasizes the beauty of the first movement's long, lyrical lines, and he brings out all of the dark drama in the slow movement. He plays the fast finale with gusto. The Mahler Chamber Orchestra acquits itself with distinction, turning in a performance that is remarkable for its power and expression.
