Notes & Reviews:

The American composer Jonathan Dawe has forged over the years an original and highly distinctive compositional voice. This new collection of chamber works features all premiere recordings in compelling and elegant performances. Dawe's highly innovative and conjured world joins Baroque imagery with a modernist mix, cast with dynamic dramatic flair. Upon completing his graduate studies at The Juilliard School in 1995 he joined the doctoral faculty where he currently teaches.

American Record Guide, September/October 2015
His relationship with the Western classical tradition is respectful yet playful, with creative takes on familiar genres and ensembles. His Gibbons, Gongs, and Gamelans (2005) does not actually involve any apes; but this piece for percussion ensemble is full of bouncing, upbeat rhythms. Zipoli Automata (2008) is a short work for organ with lots of "wrong notes". Its many organ parts sound like typical baroque writing, but when they are combined they create jarring clashes of harmony. Finally, the piece the record gets its title from has a remarkably specific title: L'Dafne: an opera of 311 notes, exactly & a sinfonia & ritornello of 80 notes, also (2006). This is my favorite music on the record, partly for its brevity. It is a potent 14-minute opera with only three characters: Dafne, Cupid, and Apollo. I enjoyed listening to Dawe's record.
