Notes & Reviews:

Paavali Jumppanen is an internationally esteemed pianist and versatile performer. His vast repertoire spans the literature from Bach to the Avant-garde. Jumppanen has spent several years performing the Viennese Classics, in particular Beethoven. His complete cycles performances of Beethoven's and Mozart's Piano Sonatas have won critical acclaim. Jumppanen wrote the liner notes for this release.

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
In the first part of his Beethoven sonata cycle, the incredibly versatile Jumppanen offers assured, dynamic interpretations. His expertise in classical Viennese music, gained through extensive performance of Beethoven and Mozart and a stint as a visiting scholar in Harvard University's music department, certainly helps. Along with crisp runs and vivid colors, his sheer enthusiasm intensifies the immediacy of his performance. Subtle improvisatory twists, particularly with ornamentation, feel perfectly placed. Balancing the brightness of the first three sonatas, he brings out tenderness in the first movement of Piano Sonata 28. The Hammerklavier is truly authoritative. This is one of the more fascinating Beethoven recordings I have heard recently.

BBC Music Magazine, May 2014
Jumppanen is prodigiously gifted, and he provides deeply felt accounts of the slow movements...but [his] departures from the script elsewhere won't be to everyone's taste. Jumppanen offers an eloquent perofrmance of the Hammerklavier Sonata's Adagio...Good recording sound adds to the allure of these otherwise stimulating performances.
