Notes & Reviews:

Leading Canadian baritone Gerald Finley's debut album on Ondine, includes two world-premiere recordings. Finley has captivated audiences and critics alike with award-winning recordings and performances on CD, DVD, and at the world's major opera and concert venues. Thomas Sanderling, friend of the composer and a Shostakovich expert was also personally involved in the process of the discovery of the versions included in this recording and conducted their premiere performances.

BBC Music Magazine, July 2014
Everything here works beautifully. Finley and Sanderling drive home the climactic phrase of Shostakovich's Shakespeare sonnet, 'And art made tongue-tied by authority'...And the orchestral partnership is beautifully honed.

Gramophone Magazine, July 2014
Finley and Sanderling are compelling advocates, and their subtlety makes for a refreshing change from the more stentorian delivery of certain old Soviet counterparts.

The Observer, 13th April 2014
Finley, always an intelligent and rewarding singer, has produced something rather special here...Finley, who studied medieval Italian, has fashioned an authentic text to work with Shostakovich's music [for the Michelangelo poems]...The result is both moving and profound, with Finley at his warm and sinuous best.

The Telegraph, 19th June 2014
Finley has taken songs composed by Shostakovich to English and Italian texts translated into Russian and restored them to their original languages. This bold experiment has incurred adjustments to phrasing, note-lengths and stress that purists might find hard to accept, but there can be no question of the haunted beauty of the music or the superb performance.
