Notes & Reviews:

Swiss composer Hermann Suter's works reflects that of the German late-Romantics of his era, including Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler, many of whom he conducted when posted in Basel. Suter's three great string quartets document different stations of his musical awareness, thereby revealing much of his artistic personality and of his intellectual world The Beethoven Quartett, founded in 2006 in Beethoven's home town of Bonn, is today based in Basel.

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
This album has all three of his string quartets, and the quality remains high. Quartet 1 settles into a surging passage, gathering energy till a quieter ending. The music has fun alternating three and four beat meters. Quartet 2 (1910) has an ambitious, upward striving opening. After a calmer section, the music gets more dramatic. The harmonies are so rich that sometimes it's hard to believe you're hearing only four instruments. His third quartet, The Song of the Blackbird, incorporates the call of that estimable species. The development includes a fascinating pizzicato section with two-against-three rhythms. Performances are all fine; recorded sound the same. Thus we discover further value in a little-known master. I await their planned release of Suter's cantata, Le Laudi.
