Performers Composers

Notes & Reviews:

The voice of woman composers has been more or less ignored throughout the centuries. True, they were denied higher education for a very long time, and one must not forget that even though composing was considered a public statement for men, this practice was uniquely a personal matter for the ladies.

In 2007, soprano Hélène Guilmette made an initial foray in this field of woman composers by incorporating works by Amy Beach to her recital program. Shortly thereafter while skimming through sheet music on rue de Rome in Paris, she came upon works by Mel Bonis, a true revelation. Her appetite for new creations never failed and this is why she wants to bring to light the work of these creators that were somehow forgotten until now, and takes us on a subdued journey through the 19th and 20th centuries.

The soprano Hélène Guilmette has been leading a spectacular international career since she won Second Prize at the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition of Belgium in 2004.
