Notes & Reviews:

French song, born of the romance and closely related to the Germanic lied, came to fruition at around 1870, first with Fauré, Duparc and Chausson, then with Debussy and Ravel. The common feature was always a seeking after sophistication with regard to the correspondences between text and music, assisted by an expressive harmonic language.

Even if the piano/voice dialogue remains the focal point, song also appears in the field of chamber music, thanks to Fauré and Duparc. By extension, Ravel was deeply interested in the colors of an instrumental ensemble in association with the declamation of the voice.

For more than forty years Barbara Hendricks has performed these French songs on the world's leading concert platforms. From her first contact with the repertory during a master class in Aspen in 1968, the songs of Fauré, then of Ravel, have been added to her rich soprano repertory. Accompanied by the finest Swedish instrumentalists, she presents a varied, colorful panorama of the song with chamber ensemble by two masters of French music.

Barbara Hendricks biography will be in stores in May, 2014.
