Notes & Reviews:

Wergo's recorded traversal of the complete symphonies of Hans Werner Henze is now complete with this release of Symphonies Nos.2 and 10. Fifty years passed between Henze's second symphony and his tenth, which was to be his last. The second was commissioned in 1949 by the South German Radio and was his first large-scale 12-tone composition. Henze's tenth was a liberation - from Beethoven as a model, but also from the dark mood of the ninth. Conductor Marek Janowski, who celebrated his 75th birthday in February 2014, leads the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin in definitive recordings of these modern German masterpieces.

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
Henze's Symphony 2 (1949) was composed in atonement for what he felt was the failure of his First Symphony. It opens with a warmly lyrical slow movement. The central movement is an exciting. With the War in mind, the resolutely anti-fascist Henze produced one of his most meaningful and accessible works. Symphony 10 (2000) was his last symphony and composed in memory of his patron, Paul Sacher. If you enjoy such challenges you will appreciate it.
