Notes & Reviews:

The mysterious and madness-ridden Neapolitan court of Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa was where the first pieces for arpa doppia were created. Parthenope, one of the mythological Sirens, was said to have plunged from cliffs near Naples into the sea after her harp failed to lure Odysseus to his doom. Ever since, she has been venerated as the patron goddess of the city. This recording featuring harpist Margret Köll focuses on music from Naples during the 16th and 17th centuries and contains music by composers from da Venosa's circle. It includes compositions of Trabaci, de Maque, Mayone and Gesualdo.

This is a deeply compelling illustration, in both sound and pictures ... of the harp culture prevalent in the kingdom in the 17th century ... very pleasing ... Koll is a superb harpist. Giovanni de Macque's quirky Durezze, e ligature in particular features some wonderful manipulation of harpistic light and shade.

American Record Guide, November/December 2014
The double harp is a spectacular instrument to see, with a timbre that suggests both harp and theorbo. I think the first time I heard it was in one of the early Monteverdi Orfeo recordings that followed his instructions for instrumentation - there's a magnificent duet for double harps in the opera's show-stopping number, 'Possente spirto'. K÷ll's release includes a variety of pieces in different styles - toccatas, dances, and variations, even an intabulation of Arcadelt's madrigal 'Ancidetemi pur' (incidentally, one of Frescobaldi's most expressive works treats the same piece) - all expertly performed. The virtuosic flourishes in the toccatas and the intabulation are particularly impressive, as is the elastic sense of timing and beautiful range of tonal color. The sound is first rate.
