Album Notes

This CD contains compositions that later received the International Computer Music Association Commission Awards 1994-1996.

A collection of five notable recent computer music compositions: Stephen Montague's "Silence: John, Yvar and Tim" (1994) is a set of three elegies for composers John Cage (employing Cage's ideas of the prepared piano and strings), Yvar Mikhashoff (employing material from a tango written for Mikhashoff's tango collection project), Tim Souste (which borrows material from Souster's "Hambledon Hill" string quartet); Canadian composer Jonty Harrison's "Unsound Objects" (1995, rev. 1996) is a well-crafted piece in the tradition of classic early electronic music; Canadian composer Michael Matthews' "In Emptiness, Over Emptiness" (1994) is an eerie and dynamic work for soprano and computer music on tape, existing both as an independent concert piece and also as part of a music theater work entitled "Madrugada" ("I wish plants in the fields could talk, They must have tears! They must have songs! To hatch a crow, a black rainbow bent in emptiness over emptiness but flying..."); the Buenos Aires-based composer Ricardo Dal Farra's "Tierra y Sol" (Earth and Sun) (1996) was built from ancient woodwind instruments of the Andes, more contemporary cross-cultural instruments and the relatively recent guitar introduced during the Spanish colonization...it is an attempt to express "the people's vital cycle living high on the mountains of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and Argentina" (Dal Farra); the concluding composition is Frances White's poetic "Birdwing" (1996) for shakuhachi and computer music on tape. ~ "Blue" Gene Tyranny
