Notes & Reviews:

World premiere recording of Anthony Payne's new arrangement of Bruckner's 2nd symphony. The second in a series which sees Trevor Pinnock and the Academy perform and record works which are retrospectively reigniting the Arnold Schoenberg Society's vision of performing chamber reductions of symphonic repertoire. Rounding off this recording is Strauss' Wein, Weib und Gesang by Alban Berg, whose own pieces were regularly performed by the Society.

Payne creates a beautiful pinpoint effect that illuminates Bruckner's argument and makes it seem even more productively spacious. Berg's transcription of Johann Strauss II's Wein, Weib und Gesang follows.

MusicWeb International, 15th May 2014
The scale of Bruckner's symphonic vision and the weight of his musical ideas are certainly preserved, and the performance is indeed persuasive...There are too many sublime moments to pick out individual sections, and I have no arguments with Trevor Pinnock's conducting.
