Notes & Reviews:

World premiere recording! - Cesar Franck's first opera - staged for the first time! - Known mainly for the few transcendent, harmonically adventurous instrumental works of his later years, Cesar Franck's first opera was composed when he was barely twenty years of age. - Orchestrated by composer Luc Van Hove, from the autographic piano score manuscript. - Paolo Arrivabeni conducts the Orchestra & Chorus of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie. - Stage direction by Jaco van Dormael.

American Record Guide, November/December 2014
For his first opera Franck chose the Italian composer Alessandro Stradella (1639-82) as a subject. Composed in 1839, the opera was never orchestrated. It finally saw the stage in 1983 (Venice) in a two-piano arrangement by Gerard Parmentier. Two years later it was produced at the Paris Opera Comique, in the same two-piano arrangement. Finally the opera was orchestrated by Luc van Hove and produced in Liège at the Royal Opera de Wallonie - the performance recorded here. The performance is also available on DVD and Blu-Ray. A French and English libretto is at www.dynamic.it.
