Conductor Ensembles Composers

Notes & Reviews:

A groundbreaking American composer, Ives' simultaneous intertwining of formal and vernacular elements in his works is his hallmark. Instances is Carter's last orchestral composition and his penultimate work of any kind. This recording was its world premiere performance. Gershwin's ever-popular American in Paris closes the disc. - The Seattle Symphony under their Music Director Ludovic Morlot has enjoyed national and international acclaim for its programming and performances.

Notes & Reviews:

Reviews

Disappointing
The Ives Symphony 2 receives a somewhat somber, monochromatic treatment. Itís often shy in terms of drive and rubato with some questionable balances in the more densely scored passages. While there are moments of effectiveness, the Andante cantabile, e.g., on balance itís a reading lacking in true conviction. Ivesian playfulness, incongruity and unabashed sentimentality are better served by Bernstein and the NYP in their pioneering 1960 recording on Columbia. The same might be said of the American In Paris. Itís well played but lacks the bounce and swing of some of the best available recordings. Instances is the last orchestral piece composed by Elliot Carter. It was a special gift from the composer to Maestro Morlot. Admirers of the late composer will be elated to have this. The engineering is spacious and boasts wide dynamics.
