Notes & Reviews:

This is a welcome reissue of the groundbreaking, near legendary, now benchmark 1977 premiere recording of Beethoven's Leonore (later, Fidelio). The cast, including Edda Moser, Edith Mathis and Theo Adam, were some of the best singers of that time. The Staatskapelle Dresden is here conducted by Herbert Blomstedt. The complete libretto is available at the Brilliant Classics website. "I was enthralled by this performance...recommended to all Beethovenites and opera-lovers." (Gramophone, August 1977)

Cassilly is a forthright Florestan, but the sound of his voice is not altogether sympathetic...Moser seems to be slightly over-parted in the title role, although she does have the agility to negotiate the more coloratura aspects which Beethoven toned down considerably in Fidelio... If you want Leonore as far as possible in the form that Beethoven originally conceived it...then this Blomstedt recording remains eminently satisfactory.
