Notes & Reviews:

G. B. Pergolesi was a prolific composer despite his short 26-year life. This 2012 recording features world-premiere performances of three cantatas hitherto unpublished. Founded 2007, Musica Perduta was created with the intention of researching and casting light on unpublished works by celebrated 17th - 18th century composers. The group then concertizes the discovered works, often using period instruments. Booklet contains liner notes and performer biographies in English and Italian.

Whether or not the versions recorded here are from Pergolesi's pen, it is nice to have them on disc in such good performances. The music is enjoyable, and this programme bears witness to Pergolesi's reputation in his time and the wide-spread practice of arrangement and transcription in the baroque era.

The mandolin concerto is extremely well played by Mauro Squillante, who is also editing a critical edition of the piece. It's a very effective and idiomatic transcription, and in Squillante's hands the intricate textures come out clearly with nice balance between the mandolin and the basso continuo. The mandolin sound is warm. That's very welcome, as it's an instrument that can sound quite banal and trite because of a plink-plunk timbre. In 'Nel Chiuso Centro' he plays the role of Orfeo, by turns expressing gentle remembrance of Euridice, longing hope for her return, then a mix of sad resignation and fearlessness in the face of death. In 'Luce Degli Occhi Miei' the singer sings of the steadfastness, hope, and contentment of faithfulness in love notwithstanding the inescapable pain and trial that go with love. The ensemble plays with elegance: tempos are well judged so that the music moves and breathes in a natural and eloquent way. The result is very engaging and attractive. In 'La Maddalena Al Sepolcro' soprano Valentina Varriale takes the listener to the empty tomb on Easter morning (just days after Pergolesi's best-known piece 'Stabat Mater' takes place). The performance is very fine.
