Notes & Reviews:

Included as an appendix to his Treatise of Good Taste in the Art of Musick - that is, at the end of a slender volume whose title places it in the realm of theory - Francesco Geminiani's (1687-1762) songs, arias and sonatas on popular Scottish songs are a small treasure - trove that deserves to be better known. On this recording the works by Gemanini are combined with the Scottish songs of Franz Joseph Haydn, an ideal counterpart to those of Gemanini: his adaptations retain the simplicity and freshness of the originals, as well as a certain modesty coupled with depth, all typical aspects of Haydn's works and character. Scottish soprano Susan Hamilton specialises in Baroque and contemporary music. As an in-demand soloist, Ms. Hamilton has appeared with the world's leading ensembles and collaborated with numerous contemporary composers. Manfredo Kraemer directs the Rare Fruits Council, the ensemble he founded in 1996. The individual members are among the most sought after performers on the European Baroque scene.
