Notes & Reviews:

Riccardo Chailly has just been appointed musical director at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, while still retaining the post of Kapellmeister at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig.

The name of Felix Mendelssohn is inextricably linked with Leipzig and with the Gewandhaus: he was appointed Kapellmeister of the orchestra in 1835 and held the position until his death in 1847.

The cornerstone of this album is one of Felix Mendelssohn's best known works, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and the album includes the five instrumental pieces from the incidental music, with the world famous Wedding March closing the suite.

The two Piano Concertos are played by Saleem Ashkar, who has performed the Concerto No.1 a number of times with Riccardo Chailly and the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig and on tour.

The album includes the world premiere recording of Ruy Blas (Hogwood's critical edition).

The Times, 13th June 2014
With playing of this order, a barnacled piece such as Mendelssohn's Wedding March springs into new life...There's just something about the sound they make - the unity of the ensemble, the lively colours, the fine blend - that positively demands a tactile response.
