János Starker: The Mercury Living Presence Recordings - Music of Bach, Vivaldi, Corelli, Locatelli, Debussy, Chopin, Brahms et al.

Notes & Reviews:

One of many celebrated artists on the Mercury Living Presence label, this box is a collection of some of the finest recordings made by the master cellist Janos Starker. His death last year prompted warm obituaries across the world's press.

A valuable cross-section of key cello works in distinguished performances. From Bach's cornerstone solo suites, to some lesser known Italian Sonatas, the two classic Brahms sonatas, and three concertos by Schumann, Dvorák, Lalo and Saint-Saëns. The accompanying booklet includes three separate elements - an overview on Starker's contribution to recording, Starker's own notes on recording and the original album essays.

The Daily Telegraph
Starker possessed a phenomenal technique. His bow attacked the strings with both a ravishing intensity and a deep, biting edge. He was equally startling to watch, his piercing black eyes glaring out from beneath deep black eyebrows.
