Notes & Reviews:

Malcolm Williamson (1931 - 2003), Master of the Queen's Music from 1975-2003, was the first non-Britain to hold the post since its creation in the 17th century. A gifted pianist, organist and prolific composer, his music naturally includes a substantial number of organ works. His writing for organ is strikingly powerful in its originality and its eclectic mix of styles, ranging from lyrical introspection to fiery virtuosity. Two of the works on this CD are receiving their first recordings.

American Record Guide, January/February 2015
The present recording was made on the 1912 Harrison & Harrison organ at the church of St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol. It is admirably suited to Williamson's music. The instrument is recorded here with a good sense of space that allows for powerful climaxes without the listener feeling bludgeoned by the sound. Winpenny's performances are exemplary, with an authoritative aplomb that makes even the most daunting passages seem almost effortless: a realization of the composer's artistic vision and not just a virtuosic stunt. It is serious playing that befits serious music. Would that I could say that of all the organ discs I have reviewed. Winpenny is currently assistant Master of the Music at St Albans Cathedral following an appointment as sub-organist at St Paul's Cathedral in London.
