Notes & Reviews:

An unusual program of works by four composers of different generations and diverse backgrounds from Central and South America. Anton Baranov has won both the Guitar Foundation of America and Francisco Tárrega Competitions.

American Record Guide, November/December 2014
Mr Baranov was born in Russia and now teaches for the St Petersburg Conservatory. He has won awards in 15 competitions, including the Francisco Tarrega and this year's GFA Competition, which resulted in this recording. Mr Baranov was born in 1984, which make him 19 or 20. And he is a fully developed artist, with an impeccable technique, an expressive and inventive imagination, and beautifully balanced taste. Mr Baranov plays with the stylistic identity of a native of Latin America. No Russian accent here. I look forward to following his career as it develops.

Beautiful & Startling
Anton Baranov - Guitar Recital - NAXOS

In this latest edition to Naxos records highly regarded Laureate Series, internationally acclaimed Russian guitarist Anton Baranov avoids the standard Baroque to Romantic to Modern guitar recital format in favor of an all-contemporary Latin American program.

Though each is unique in his own way, all four composers featured here share an experimental approach, mixing indigenous folk melodies and dance forms with a modernist interest in shifting time signatures and dissonant harmonies.

As an acknowledged virtuoso and winner of prestigious guitar competitions in Germany, Italy, Paraguay, Spain and the US, Mr. Baranovs considerable technical precision and deep musical understanding are more than equal to the challenge of this sometimes difficult, but always intriguing set of contemporary compositions.

Guitar Recital by Anton Baranov is a must-have for guitar students and modern music aficionados alike. There is exhilaration to this music, propelled by Mr. Baranovs virtuosic performance that recommends itself as well to the more open-minded general listener.
