Classical & Early Romantic Recordings of Haydn, Mozart & Schubert: Symphonies / Karajan (rec. 1970-1981)

Notes & Reviews:

The Herbert von Karajan Collection comprises thirteen box sets containing official remasterings of the finest recordings the Austrian conductor made for EMI from 1946-84, now jewels of the Warner Classics catalog. He was closely associated with EMI for the majority of his recording career (specifically from 1946-60 and then again from 1969-84). This 8-CD box presents favorite orchestral works by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Cherubini and von Weber performed by the Berlin Philharmonic. Beethoven's symphonies, so central to Karajan's recorded legacy, embody music's transition from Classicism to Romanticism; this set presents symphonies by Beethoven's great Classical predecessors - Mozart and Haydn - and his admiring Romantic contemporary, Schubert. It also offers a rarity: the overture to Cherubini's opera Anacréon.
