Notes & Reviews:

The Herbert von Karajan Collection comprises thirteen box sets containing official remasterings of the finest recordings the Austrian conductor made for EMI from 1946-84, now jewels of the Warner Classics catalog. He was closely associated with EMI for the majority of his recording career (specifically from 1946-60 and then again from 1969-84). With a prime emphasis on Wagner (orchestral music from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Tristan und Isolde), Bruckner (Symphony No. 7) and R. Strauss (Ein Heldenleben, Sinfonia Domestica), all performed by the Berlin Philharmonic, this set exemplifies Karajan's mastery of the expansive forms and extensive forces of high and late Romanticism. Ein Heldenleben, in particular, can perhaps be viewed as the conductor's personal manifesto.
