As of 2013, following a lapse of some ten years, the famed Erato imprint has been reborn. - John Eliot Gardiner (b. 1943) is best-known for his interpretations of Baroque music on period instruments. - The works here were composed by Purcell to honor and to commemorate the 1694 birthday and subsequent death of Queen Mary later that same year. Parts of the funeral music were performed at Purcell's own funeral service late in 1695.
