Notes & Reviews:

Frequently singled out for her phenomenal vocals Scottish mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill brings her exemplary range of vocal colors and rich emotional expression to bear in her debut solo recital. Seldom paired, the well-known Gustav Mahler lieder follow five of wife Alma's lesser-known, but equally engaging, songs. These personal and highly romantic songs are perfectly complemented by Cargill's poetic sensitivity; her warm and vibrant voice, with the emotional insight borne of opera, is breathtakingly beautiful. In 2013 Cargill was appointed Associate Artist of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra; their recording of Berlioz Les nuits d'été & La mort de Cléopâtre with Robin Ticciati was named Gramophone's 'Recording of the Month'. Winner of the 2002 Kathleen Ferrier Award, Cargill has won many fans through her performances at The Metropolitan, New York, Covent Garden, London and Deutsche Opera, Berlin. Past and future highlights with Simon Lepper include appearances at Wigmore Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Kennedy Centre Washington, as well as her New York recital debut at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall and regular recitals live on BBC Radio Three. Cargill has performed Mahler's Symphony No. 3 and Das Lied von der Erd at the BBC Proms. Concert plans this season and beyond include the Edinburgh International Festival, Berlioz with the LSO and Gergiev, Duruflé with Ticciati, and Berlioz with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Ticciati. Simon Lepper accompanies with sensitivity and flair; an award-winning pianist specializing in vocal accompanying, Lepper is a regular recital partner of Cargill's.

Gramophone Magazine, July 2014
A bronze-tinted mezzo of Wagnerian amplitude...for the most part this Mahler-family recital...finds Cargill expressive at every level, while still proudly displaying the full glory of her voice.

The Observer, 20th July 2014
Karen Cargill, warm, instinctive and golden-voiced, and Simon Lepper are responsive partners [in Alma's songs] and in Mahler's Rückert-Lieder and Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. With Linn's usual high standards of recording and programme notes, this disc gives intimate insight into an endlessly fascinating couple.

BBC Music Magazine, September 2014
Cargill's beautifully integrated, smoky mezzo reveals the full stature of [Alma's] songs, just as Simon Lepper relishes their fearless piano writing...The Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen welcome the bright flare at the top of Cargill's mezzo; and here both she and Lepper really do grab the music by the throat.

American Record Guide, November/December 2014
The songs of both Mahlers are better served elsewhere. Alma's all fit on a single CD, and if you're interested, you might try CPO 999455, which divides the songs among three good singers. Lepper is an adroit accompanist, the sound is fine, and texts and translations are supplied.
