Notes & Reviews:

Sunday Times, 15th February 2015
A 57-minute sequence of searching pieces for unaccompanied viola sounds like a disc of a certain austerity, and so it is, an exploration of music typically cast in "thick vital layers", to use Zemtsov's phrase in her booklet preface. Her acts of decipherment are, however, compelling - the tone as seductive as the intelligence behind it is palpable.

CD Review, 14th March 2015
Minimalist forces but maximum pleasure from the way in they explore every delicious detail in these 12 concertos, reacting to one another's playing with freshness and delight that's constantly engaging. It's been captured in an excellent recording...I'll be dipping into that again just for pure pleasure as soon as I can.

Fanfare Magazine
Podger and her Brecon Baroque players make it sound like the easiest thing in the world, dashing off ornaments and runs without a backward glance, and the ensemble (led by Podger from the violin) play as if they were one musician.

Winner of numerous competitions and enjoying an outstanding solo career, Dana Zemtsov is one of the most promising violists of her generation. Unlike other stringed instruments, the viola repertoire has not been as thoroughly explored. This colorful anthology of music for solo viola, which contains a selection of challenging works, helps to remedy that situation. Zemtsov's début recording avoids the lyrical melodies and heartwarming beauty with which viola music is so often associated. Instead, there are tales of war, perplexed wanderings through obscured labyrinths, intense cries of despair, sour tears of sorrow, and at times an ironic grin.

American Record Guide, November/December 2014
She plays two works by her teacher Kugel and one by Penderecki with a very expressionist character. Her program concludes with Bach's Chromatic Fantasy as arranged by Kodaly and Kugel. She has superb technical equipment; a rich, even tone and flawless intonation. She also shows her musical limitations - maybe just youthful excess. She needs to learn that there is more than one color in the musical rainbow.
