Notes & Reviews:

BMOP/sound is delighted to feature a longtime collaborator, New England-based composer Scott Wheeler, on its latest release. In three orchestral works of striking originality, Wheeler incorporates elements from operatic drama to poetry to geography. Crazy Weather for double string orchestra takes its title from a John Ashbery poem, and channels the atmospheric volatility of Wheeler's native region. City of Shadows is an oblique, universal city portrait in noir style, while Northern Lights is a symphony inspired by the majestic severity of Sibelius's rocky and remote landscape. Gil Rose leads the BMOP orchestra in rendering these works with sparkling clarity and panache.

American Record Guide, January/February 2015
Crazy Weather and City of Shadows are from 2004 and 2006. They are neo-classical. Phrases are tonally based. Crazy Weather is the more appealing of the two; it's in three movements, and the differences between them help it go down better. The Adagio is restful and really gorgeous, and there is a similar section toward the end of City of Shadows. Northern Lights is from 1987 and is in three movements. The style is similar.
