Notes & Reviews:

On her second Navona release, composer and oboist Patricia Morehead showcases her ability to incorporate varying instrumentation into her compositions. With this variation, the composer creates a world of imagery, setting poems by such writers as Margaret Atwood and Anne Sexton in several of her pieces. Morehead adopts some of the technique and style associated with the Second Viennese School composers; yet, in most cases, Morehead implements more tonal structure throughout her works.

American Record Guide, November/December 2014
Most of her songs are under five minutes, though The Wonderful Musician, for mezzo-soprano and chamber orchestra, lasts 16. The composer grew up in northern Canada, which she tries to show in her set of Alaskan Songs with a barren texture that embraces space and silence. These are my favorites. There is an appealing warmth to most of the music, so I could recommend this to fans of atonal songs for soprano.
