Notes & Reviews:

With this release, the Zemlinsky Quartet's cycle of the complete String Quartets of Dvorák for Praga is now complete. These talented Czech musicians grasp the Slavonic idiom innately, offering performances that present a careful balance between the music's folk and classical influences. Included here are the 10th and 11th quartets (not the 13th, as noted on the inlay).

American Record Guide, November/December 2014
This is an interesting pairing of quartets that are opposite in nature. No. 10 in E-flat was commissioned for the Florentine Quartet. Its leader specified that the work be "in the Slavic spirit", hence the nickname, Slavonic. Dvorak responded with a lively, good-natured work built around Czech folk tunes. II is essentially a dumka, and the finale is a kind of skocna. No. 11 in C was a commission from Joseph Hellmesberger, Kapellmeister of the Vienna Court. This time he produced a much longer, more sophisticated work based somewhat on German romanticism with nary a Czech folk tune to be heard anywhere.
