Notes & Reviews:

Yury Revich is a young violinist taking the world by storm. He was announced as Young Artist of the Year at the 2015 International Classical Music Awards, where he was hailed as a "stunning talent... already a remarkably mature artist with a highly distinctive musical personality... He is on his way to becoming a great musician of the 21st century."

In his new CD with Odradek, Steps Through the Centuries, Yury Revich takes listeners on a musical journey through different musical ages. There are few instruments more suited to this than the violin, which has inspired composers throughout history. The disc features original works and arrangements, including music by Biber, Mozart, Richard Strauss, Debussy, as well as contemporary pieces by Christopher Caliendo, Wen Liu and Benjamin Rota, all of whom dedicated their new works to Yury Revich.

Yury is accompanied on this journey by Alejandro Picó-Leonís, pianist, Olga Filippova on harpsichord, and soprano Bibiana Nwobilo makes a guest appearance for Strauss' "Morgen!".

At only 23, Yury Revich is already a mature artist, and one of the most expressive musicians of his generation. He was awarded Young Artist of the Year at the International Classical Music Awards, 2015, and Winner of the Young Musician of the Year award at the Beethoven Center, Vienna. In 2009, Yury Revich gave his debut at Carnegie Hall, and in 2013 at La Scala, Milan.

The pieces I chose for this disc form a very interesting series of short violin compositions, as well as arrangements of piano and vocal works. The album was conceived as a journey back through the centuries, from the very contemporary to the early Baroque, with each piece marking a small step through time, displaying much of the instrument's history and showcasing its rich possibilities. The violin can be heard "talking" and "singing", but also demonstrating its virtuosic potential, for example in Kochanski's arrangement of La Campanella. With the opera and song arrangements, I hope to show how adeptly the violin can mimic the human voice, a technique famously described by Paganini as "suonar parlante". I hope that the collaboration with the amazing soprano Bibiana Nwobilo on this recording will even more clearly illustrate this continuum of timbres and expression, showing how the violin is able to communicate the same multitude of feelings expressed by the human voice.
