Notes & Reviews:

The unprecedented popularity enjoyed by John Philip Sousa was garnered through constant national and international touring with a band that included some of the very best American instrumentalists. Volume 14 of this series includes brilliant show overtures, such as The Glass Blowers, theatrical marches such as The Lambs, the suite El Capitan and His Friends, from three of Sousa's remarkably successful operettas and, last but not least, the 22 year-old composer's extraordinary collection of patriotic songs of many countries, The International Congress, which ends with The Star Spangled Banner set against the violin obbligato from Wagner's Tannhauser.

Reviews

#14 !
This disc marks volume 14 of Keith Brionís excellent survey of Sousaís band works. Its well sequenced 65 minute program includes not only marches, but occasional pieces and instrumental selections drawn from the composerís numerous operettas as well as some notable discoveries. Constant throughout is Sousaís penchant for attractive tune spinning and nimble, innovative scoring. Sousa enthusiasts will find much to admire here. The central Band of the RAF performs with snap and vigor. Some of the standout tracks: #1, #2, #4, #7 and #12. The sound pickup is tight, full-bodied and well delineated. The liner notes, adapted from several authoritative sources, are highly informative.
