Notes & Reviews:

This program includes some of the least known masterpieces from Ernest Bloch's nearly 30 works for orchestra. Macbeth: Two Symphonic Interludes is an intoxicating and passionate distillation of Shakespeare's powerful drama. In Memoriam is a brief elegy dedicated to the pianist Ada Clement, while the Three Jewish Poems were written when Bloch was mourning the death of his father. Originally conceived as a third concerto grosso, Bloch's last Symphony, in E flat major, is an at times emotionally turbulent and deeply spiritual work containing passages of harmonic acerbity.

American Record Guide, November/December 2014
Atlas does very well in the Macbeth preludes that Bloch adapted from his opera. This powerful, sometimes stormy music fits her approach very well. Bloch wrote In Memoriam in memory of pianist Ada Clement, one of his students. The main melody, a favorite of Clement's, is one he wrote to illustrate polyphony in one of his classes. In Memoriam is a short, richly colored, and noble work that Atlas also does very well. The ASV was well received in many quarters, and its reissue is worth investigating. The notes are up to Naxos's standards and include a short piece by Atlas on how a conductor should approach Bloch.
