Notes & Reviews:

The Eastern Wind Symphony present a program of 20th century works for winds, including Vincent Persichetti's Serenade, op. 85 and Joaquin Rodrigo's first work for winds, the 1966 Adagio. The Eastern Wind Symphony's professional members are accomplished and talented musicians who volunteer their time and talents to present the best in wind symphony repertoire. Artistic Director Todd Nichols and Assistant Conductor Adam Warshafsky currently guide the ensemble.

American Record Guide, November/December 2014
Next we have an album by the sort of semipro Eastern Wind Symphony, which consists of area freelancers, music educators, and other good players from the Princeton, New Jersey area. The ambitious group, founded in 1996, has an annual concert season, several commissions and recordings, and a youth symphony. Its album opens with one of those commissions, Bruce Yurko's 5-minute, hard-driving 'Red Tail Skirmish' (2012), which attempts to portray an aerial dogfight by the Tuskegee Airmen. Vincent Persichetti's Serenade (1961) consists of five genial little movements. Warren Benson's 'Solitary Dancer' (1970) is popular because of its quiet intensity. Much of David Maslanka's Give Us This Day (2007) is long and slow and meditative, as is Joaquin Rodrigo's Adagio for Wind Orchestra (1966). 'His Honor' is Henry Fillmore's best-known march; the reading is excellent. I especially appreciate how the easy melody is suppressed to allow us to hear the sparkling woodwind countermelody in the trio. As for Haydn Wood's Mannin Veen (1933), I have to wonder where it's been all my life. Based on folk songs from the Isle of Man, this amiable work is a wind band original. This is an enjoyable album. EWS sounds especially good when things are moving along deliberately.
