Notes & Reviews:

Edward Gregson is one of Britain's most versatile and prolific composers, his approachable and engaging music having gained recognition worldwide. With the BBC Philharmonic, Bramwell Tovey conducts orchestral works that take inspiration from an array of musical and extra-musical sources, revealing the breadth of Gregson's musical imagination.

American Record Guide, January/February 2015
This music tends to be weighty, and the influences of Berg, Shostakovich, Hindemith, and Mahler are apparent. Dream Song opens with an explosion, and even the quieter parts are deadly serious. The whole work is a wonderful journey, and the orchestration and creativity in development are delights along the way. The Horn Concerto uses quartal harmonies, so a comparison to Hindemith is almost inevitable. Richard Watkins plays with intensity and musicality. Aztec Dances started as a piece for recorder and piano; then came a version for flute and piano, and now there is this version for flute and 14 instruments. Concerto for Orchestra this time. It's just under 19 minutes and full of drama and intrigue. Gregson's music is impressive. This album has grown on me the more I've listened to it, and I look forward to hearing more from him. The musicians are invested in the work, and their playing is clean; the sound is quite complimentary to the orchestra.
