Notes & Reviews:

Firma Melodiya presents a set of romantic piano music performed by Vazgen Vartanian. Vazgen Vartanian is one of the brightest representatives of the new generation of the Russian pianistic school. A graduate of the Moscow Conservatory, he has also studied at the Julliard School in New York where he was conferred the degree of Master of Fine Arts. At different times, Vartanian was a pupil of such famous masters as Lev Vlassenko, Dmitri Sakharov, Andrey Pisarev and Jerome Lowenthal. The geography of the pianist's concerts is vast - he has played at some of the best venues of the world, including Lincoln Center in New York, USA, the Tohnhalle in Zurich, Switzerland, the Verdi Milan Conservatoire in Italy, the Seoul Arts Center in South Korea and others. "The God given talent", "... one of the world's outstanding virtuosi of the most intense individuality", "His accomplishments are of a master" - are just some of the enthusiastic comments on Vazgen Vartanian from the media and fellow musicians. This release features three concert programmes of Vazgen Vartanian performed at the Big and Small Halls of the Moscow Conservatory, as well as at the concert hall of the Russian Gnessin Music Academy in 2010 and 2011, and dedicated to the 200th anniversaries of three great composers of the romantic period - Frédéric Chopin, Robert Schumann and Franz Liszt. The recitals included four ballades and four scherzos by Chopin, Fantasy Pieces and Symphonic Etudes by Schumann, and fragments from the first two volumes of Liszt's Years of Pilgrimage.

American Record Guide, November/December 2014
This release proves that he has a strong point of view and compelling artistry. The program opens with some large-scale Chopin. Despite some strange rubato, his inner voicing in the slower passages of Ballade 1 is exquisite, and an impressive coda displays virtuosity of the highest order. Ballade 4 is an exercise in extremes. Here his eccentric interpretive decisions are made at the expense of structure. In contrast to his adventurous Chopin, Vartanian excels with his direct and intimate Schumann. A straightforward approach to the three Fantasy Pieces places the music above mere technical prowess. The 'Blumenstuck' is lovely and understated. He hits his stride in Liszt, where greater freedom and virtuosity is permissible. He unleashes his pyrotechnics in an astounding Reminiscences de Don Juan. The liner notes praise Vartanian's prowess. Excellent sound quality.
