Notes & Reviews:
Britain witnessed four coronations in the 20th century. The 11 marches recorded here display an excitement and grandeur appropriate to an important state and religious occasion, and highlight some of the finest ceremonial music composed in the 20th century. Many composers were either commissioned or inspired to commemorate these events, ranging from the ever-popular Elgar and Walton to the less familiar Alexander Mackenzie and Percy Godfrey. Bax, Bliss, and Sousa also caught the spirit of the moment with their legendary marches. The newly formed London Symphonic Concert Band consists of seasoned, experienced players who have played for years in British orchestras and relish the chance to record repertoire that they obviously enjoy performing.
