Notes & Reviews:
On 13th July 2014 Carlo Bergonzi - The Verdi Tenor - celebrates his 90th birthday. This special commemorative box includes all his best-known Verdi recordings, including six operas and two recitals.
Carlo Bergonzi recorded all the major Verdi roles. His 1974 recording of 31 major arias from every Verdi opera (CDs 14-16 in this collection) won multiple awards at its time of release, and is frequently referred to as a peerless achievement.
For the second half of the twentieth century, the voice of Italian tenor Carlo Bergonzi entranced audiences around the world. His voice epitomized the grandeur and lyric style associated with Verdi , although he was also known for his ability to sing verismo and bel canto roles.
Carlo Bergonzi's Verdi recordings for Decca and Deutsche Grammophon have always had a substantial following - even in deep catalogue, the six operas featured here generated nearly Euro1 million of turnover since 1992, and obviously much more before that.
If future generations wish to know just why Bergonzi was so admired they might choose to hear his successful attempt on virtually all Verdi's tenor arias for Philips: it will surely stand as one of recording's singing monuments.
His legacy on records is outstanding. He recorded many of the early works of Verdi for Philips, and his set of tenor arias from every Verdi opera was destined to be a classic from the moment of its release.
Bergonzi sounds remarkably fresh, singing with vibrant energy and robust tone. His famed knack for breathing life into his characters through thrilling dynamism and lively phrasing is fully evident throughout.
Bergonzi is the Duke in Rafael Kubelík's 1964 'Rigoletto'. Again, his every phrase is aristocratic . . . Everything he does is fascinating and there are many beautiful moments . . . with Kubelík drawing some superb playing from the orchestra of La Scala, Milan.
