Notes & Reviews:

Pennsylvania enjoys a storied history in the rich band tradition that developed in the United States starting in the mid-19th Century that continues to the present. Pennsylvania Pioneers features exclusively the music of a few of the Pennsylvanians representing this proud tradition.

American Record Guide, November/December 2014
And we finally arrive at the community band - there are still hundreds in the USA. The Allentown (PA) Band has been around longer than any other - since 1829. And while I would not call its sound sublime, it is a consistently good band. How many community bands have a recording series? I heard albums 12-14 some years back (Sept/Oct 1997: 247, Sept/Oct 1998: 264, Sept/Oct 2000: 239), and now here is No. 26. All of the pieces were composed by Pennsylvanians in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and almost all are marches. Also included are Lucien Cailliet's medley of Stephen Foster songs and Ethelbert Nevin's sentimental, four-movement Day in Venice.
