Notes & Reviews:

NY Legend Steven Blier and Super-Nova Soprano team up to create a comprehensive recording of Spanish songs in the four Spanish Dialects. Joyce DiDonato says, " This CD is a triple threat: sublime, beautiful songs, exquisite singing, masterful playing. What musical riches Spain has to offer - the diverse and transporting glories of Catalan, Basque, Sephardic, and Castilian music. Corinne Winters is one of America's premier new voices, and in Steve Blier she has the collaborator of one's dreams."

Reviews

Lovely recording from an up and coming gifted opera singer
This recording was recommended to me by a friend, and I must say that my friend does indeed have good taste. Corinne Winters has a lovely soprano voice, slanted toward the alto range rather than the higher end of things, although her range does allow her to accurately hit notes on the high end when required. The concept behind the disc is based on songs from Spanish composers, and it seems to suit Ms. Winters very well indeed.

Right from the first track, the clarity of the recording and suitableness of her accompanist (Steven Blier) is evident. Her diction is exemplary, and track 5 (“Maig”, featuring Drew Fader on guitar) is particularly noteworthy, capturing the atmosphere of a night in the Spanish country beautifully – I love this track. The Basque folk song “Nik Baditut” is similarly satisfying, and Ms. Winters warm tone is captivating.

I also found myself dumbstruck by the beauty of “Si la mar fuera de tinto”, featuring both Mr. Blier, Maya Lahyani (a lovely mezzo-soprano), and Oren Fader on Guitar. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. And “Adio querdio” (farewell, my beloved) is heartbreakingly amazing.

This disc is a first offering from Ms. Winters, and I am very much looking forward to her next recording – or the opportunity to see her in person in January. If you enjoy a warm alto-leaning soprano as well as Spanish themed songs, then I highly recommend this disc.
