Heavy Breathing
Massimo Marchese “Si amores me han de matar” CENTAUR

This recording contains as thorough a cross section of Spanish renaissance compositions for the vihuela as one is likely to find; Mudarra,, Milan, de Narvaez, every major published composer is well represented.
Tuned like a lute, but shaped like a guitar, the vihuela is sometimes thought of as an evolutionary step between the two instruments; so, too, these compositions could be considered an Urtext of early Spanish music and a continuing source of inspiration for 20th century composers like de Falla, Albeniz and Rodrigo.
Massimo Marchese brings a scholar’s knowledge and a virtuoso’s skill to this project; his tone, timing, and dynamic range are precise and compelling.
Sadly, the over all listening experience is marred by a persistent noise (particularly evident in the quieter passages) that sounds as though Mr. Marchese has serious breathing difficulties.
This is especially unfortunate as this source of distraction might easily have been minimized or eliminated altogether, either by more careful microphone placement during the recording process or by a little creative engineering during the mixing or post-production mastering phases.
That said, “Si amores me han de matar” by Massimo Marchese contains very influential (and rarely heard) early music played by a master vihuelist. It should be of interest to many of the world’s millions of guitar students and to all of the world’s dozens of vihuelists.
