Julius Bittner: Der Musikant, opera / Grand Vienna Radio SO; Prohaska

Album Summary

>Wolf, Hugo : Eichendorff Lieder
Conductor Ensemble Composer

Notes & Reviews:

The Austrian composer Julius Bittner (1874-1939) was once, according to historical sources, one of the best known and most performed Austrian opera composers during the first half of the 20th century. Der Musikant, which premiered at the Vienna State Opera in 1909 with Bruno Walter conducting, is heard here in a 1949 Vienna performance, Felix Prohaska conducting, and starring, among others, baritone Karl-Schimtt-Walter and tenor Günther Treptow, a prominent Wagnerian in the near-aftermath of WWII.

American Record Guide, November/December 2014
There is sufficient ambience. The singers are all excellent. The only signer whose name is familiar to me is Ester Rethy, who sings the main female character, Violetta. The other well-known name is the conductor, Felix Prohaska, who leads the performance with drive and commitment. The lead baritone Schmitt-Walter and tenor Treptow also sing very well. This is quite listenable.
