Notes & Reviews:

Karajan was universally acknowledged as one of the greatest conductors of both Italian opera and orchestral showpieces. A varied and entertaining program of opera intermezzi is combined with a CD of overtures by Rossini and von Suppé, and a CD including excerpts from the ballet Gaité Parisienne (based on Offenbach's operas).

CD 1 OPERA INTERMEZZI Universally acknowledged as one of the greatest conductors of both Italian opera and orchestral showpieces, Herbert von Karajan was uniquely qualified to undertake this varied and entertaining program of interludes and other orchestral music from operas. During a stay in Italy he learnt the language, and later directed many operas at La Scala, Milan, recording a memorable Cavalleria and Pagliacci coupling there for Deutsche Grammophon shortly before the present disc was made. Personal recollections also played a part. In his own words: "I remember being in La Scala, Milan, during the war. L'amico Fritz was being performed and Mascagni was there at the rehearsal ... He was ill and lame - ... and had great difficulty in getting to the rostrum. But he finally got there ... and lifted his baton. And - well, the music started and there was suddenly a great explosion of sound that no one could possibly have been prepared for. I shall never forget that moment. It was incredible." Karajan's description could equally well apply to his own performances of Mascagni and indeed all the music on this disc.

CD 2 OFFENBACH: Gaité Parisienne / GOUNOD: Faust Ballet Music etc. Premiered in 1938 in Monte Carlo, Gaîté Parisienne is a compilation of excerpts from Jacques Offenbach's operas - including the famous Can-Can from Orpheus in the Underworld and the Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann - all brilliantly arranged and orchestrated as a ballet by French composer conductor Manuel Rosenthal. Herbert von Karajan first recorded it with great success in 1958 in London; but, as his biographer Richard Osborne writes, his 1971 Berlin remake is just "as scintillating and in the final 'Barcarolle') as moving....Rarely have the waltzes sounded as sumptuous and at the same time as dangerous.... nor has any conductor suggested quite so obviously the aristocratic allure of music which is both a salute to the Second Empire and a requiem for it." In composing his Faust for Paris in 1859, Charles Gounod duly supplied the ballet mandatory in French opera, and its success only added to the entire work's popularity. Karajan recorded the Faust dance music in 1971 as a coupling for Gaité Parisienne, all performances of "polish and sparkle showing [the conductor's] characteristic panache" (Penguin Guide).

CD 3 ROSSINI: Overtures: Il barbiere di Siviglia, La gazza ladra, Semiramide, Guillaume Tell / SUPPÉ: Ein Morgen, ein Mittag, ein Abend in Wien, Leichte Kavallerie, Dichter und Bauer Rossini's meteoric career was launched in 1810, when he was only 18, with the success of a one-act musical farce in Venice. It ended in 1829 with his grand opéra for Paris, Guillaume Tell. For the next 40 years he wrote virtually nothing more, but he had already produced some of the most popular works in the whole opera repertoire. Not all his works are comic operas such as Il barbiere di Siviglia (1816). They also include more serious operas such as La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie, 1817), Semiramide (1823) and, of course, William Tell. Karajan didn't conduct Rossini's operas in the theatre, but he loved the music and in 1971 made this distinguished recording of the composer's most famous overtures, "played with great virtuosity and flair" (Gramophone). The coupling, recorded around the same time - alongside Götterdämmerung "in one of those juxtapositions that was only possible in Karajan's Berlin" (Richard Osborne) - was this selection of overtures by the Austrian light opera composer Franz von Suppè (who as a young man met Rossini), praised by Gramophone for the Berlin Philharmonic's "luscious" playing, "yet with superb detail and clarity".
