Notes & Reviews:

Leon Fleisher - "the pianistic find of the century," said Pierre Monteux - was born in San Francisco in 1928 and accepted into the studio of master pianist Artur Schnabel at age nine. Seven years later Fleisher made his New York Philharmonic debut, and in 1952, became the first American to win the Queen Elisabeth competition, leading to a series of legendary recordings made with conductor George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. In 2014, Leon Fleisher, at age 85, completed the present recording, consisting largely of works for left hand, including one of the pianist's specialties - Bach's Chaconne, arranged for left hand by Brahms. The album also features works composed for Leon Fleisher by George Perle, Leon Kirchner, and Dina Koston as well as favorites by George Gershwin and Jerome Kern. All the Things You Are is Leon Fleisher's first solo album in nearly a decade, and is a testament to the enduring musicianship of a great artist.

American Record Guide, November/December 2014
Even at age 85, Fleisher remains one of the greatest pianists of his generation, performing with remarkable vitality and versatility. It is still richly textured and effective here. With an affinity for lyricism, Fleisher displays a wonderful range of color here and in the sensitively rendered 'The Man I Love'. He reinforces the gorgeous melodic lines with subtly applied rubato and exquisite phrasing. Played with elegance, the highly angular Musical Offerings, composed in celebration of Fleisher's 70th birthday, is one of the high points of this program. The title work, 'All the Things You are', is a lush and potent closer to this stunning array of works.

Masterful Performances
Listen to this album very carefully. Otherwise, it's easy to forget that Leon Fleisher is performing with just his left hand. The chords are so artfully arpeggiated, and the movement up and down the keyboard so swift, that Fleisher maintains the illusion that he's playing with both hands. And that's sort of the point. These works -- and Leon Fleisher's performances -- can be judged on their own merits, not a special sub-set of music.

This recital disc, with two exceptions, features works that were either composed or arranged for Fleisher. And what a program! The original works include Leon Kirchener's 1995 "L.H," George Perle's "Musical Offerings" (for Fleisher's 70th birthday), and Dina Koston's 'Thoughts of Evelyn." Fleisher's friend and colleague Earl Wild re-arranged his study Gerswin's "The Man I Love" for him. Also included is Brahms' left hand study of a Bach Chaconne, and Federico Mompou's 1930 Prelude No. 6 for left hand. And the disc concludes with Stephen Prutsman's arrangement of Jerome Kern's "All the Things You Are."

Leon Fleisher's musicality brings out the best in each of these compositions, and unites them into a cohesive program. An amazing audio document.
