Notes & Reviews:

Handel''s one act opera-ballet Terpsichore (1734) is followed by the ballets sequences from his 1735 opera seria, Ariodante. Leading baroque conductor James Richman founded the NYC-based Concert Royal in 1974 and remains its Artistic Director. About soprano Ava Pine: "... perfect balance of passion and intellect... a voice of natural beauty and flexibility" - D Magazine (Dallas, TX) About mezzo Kirsten Sollek: ... an appealingly rich alto" - NY Times; "... elemental tone quality." - The Philadelphia Inquirer

All those works have a backstory. In 1734 a French dance company, led by the distinguished dancer and choreographer Marie Sale, appeared in London. Handel excitedly took up this opportunity to engage Salle and her troupe. He composed the Terpsichore prologue expressly for her: she portrayed the title muse in dance only. Handel moved further quickly, adding to the first two acts of his new opera, Ariodante elaborate ballet episodes and then incorporating ballet episodes into his later Alcina, all with Salle. We have here, now, the second recording of the Terpsichore prologue. Handel composed the vocal parts for the soprano Strada (Erato) and the castrato Cresting (Apollo). Richman's two singers are skillful and quite pleasing (with a mezzo in the castrato part). In the remaining space, Richman gives the two ballet finales from Ariodante, complete with their vocal segments, and in those Pine proves particularly eloquent. Richman's 12-voice chorus sings lustily in its segments. His period-instrument orchestra plays very well. So this Richman program holds the fort for now in this Handelian realm. Praise-be, full texts are supplied.
