Notes & Reviews:

Sesto Bruscantini (1919-2003) was one of the most refined bel canto interpreters post-WWII. His Mozart, Rossini, Pergolesi and Donizetti roles are absolutely referential; he was a pioneer of the Rossini Renaissance in the 1950's. He career began as a bass, but after some ten years he switched to baritone roles. He possessed a dark, somber timbre and commanded excellent phrasing. This 1963 broadcast of Rigoletto is previously unreleased. Rare excerpts of Bruscantini in two bass roles are included.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
Sesto Bruscantini spent most of his career in lighter roles (Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti). His vocal weight makes him the more dramatic, and he interpolates more of the traditional high notes that simply make the opera more exciting. As a bonus on the Rome disc, Bruscantini sings arias and ensembles from La Sonnambula and I Masnadieri. As Gilda we have two distinct kinds of voice. Emilia Ravaglia is a light coloratura in the tradition of Lily Pons or Roberta Peters. For the role of the Duke there is no contest. Aldo Bottion sounds small-voiced from the beginning. He uses his bright voice musically. Aldo Bottion sounds small-voiced from the beginning. He uses his bright voice musically. The choruses and orchestras sing and play well. I prefer Carlo Franci's crisp, rather fast tempos from Rome to Gavazzeni.
