Notes & Reviews:

Gramophone Magazine, November 2014
[Sitkovetsky] does not underplay [the Violin Concerto] darkness but neither does he miss its soaring, aspirational quality...Wallfisch's performance is electric. The Piano Concerto was certainly the right choice to end this disc, if one listens to it straight through: it's an exuberant, colourful work.

Like the Violin Concerto , [the Piano Concerto] exemplifies Panufnik's ability to make constructivistic procedures intensely expressive: a simple pair of intervals can repeat endlessly, yet never become tedious.

The release of these three great concerti marks CPO's conclusion of its complete edition of Andrzej Panufnik's symphonic works. For Panufnik it was vital to assign genuine importance to the orchestra in the Piano Concerto; it was never to drown out the soloist's part but instead rely on tonal texture contrasts. In his Violin Concerto, he exposed the solo part to keep it ever-prominent, as well as achieve a specific color and texture. His last major work turned out to be the Cello Concerto (1991).

American Record Guide, January/February 2015
There are three terrific. All were written for brand-name players, and previous recordings of them are aged and hard to come by. They are all accessible, entertaining (slow movements are beautiful), and make fine vehicles for their soloists. The Violin Concerto (1971) was written for Menuhin and scored for string orchestra. The two-movement Cello Concerto (1991) was Panufnik's last work. Written for Rostropovich (released way back in 1993 on a British label - Panufnik became a British subject after he fled Poland), it is a study in palindromes (symmetries again). The Piano Concerto (1961-72-83) acts as a summary of his career. Performances are stunning. Don't miss this.
