Notes & Reviews:

In recent years, composers began inquiring of the dynamic, charming and top-ranked mandolin/guitar Trekel-Tröster Duo if they might compose a work especially for them. This CD project, a fascinating mixture of works all receiving their premieres, is the result. The accompanying booklet includes composer commentary on their respective works in German and English. Since founding the duo in 2004, Steffen Trekel and Michael Tröster have performed across Europe, Japan, the USA and South Korea.

And all wrote these works for, and dedicated them to, the Duo. Wusthoff's Collagen was originally written for Siegfried Behrend, scored for guitar and orchestra. The work is a big, romantic piece, easy to imagine in orchestral garb. Markus Joppich's oddly-titled Smokers of the Deep Sea refers to a deep sea phenomenon: hydrothermal vents that release smoke into the sea and heat the water up to 400 degree centigrade. Daniel Wolff's Tremata e Choro was commissioned at a guitar festival in Brazil, and has a distinct Brazilian flavor. The 'Tremata' uses tremolo for both guitar and mandolin to good effect, and the 'Choro' could have been written by Pernambuco. My favorite is Michael Kubik's Minimal Dowland, a three-movement piece with quotes from Dowland's songs arising from a minimalist background - it's both beautiful and witty, combining music separated by three and a half centuries. The performances are consistently of the highest. Trekel and Troster are skilled, expressive virtuosos, with a huge range of color and dynamics.
